Residents Start Pedestrian Audits of the Transitway Diversion Route

22 April 2014 | Frustrated by four months of waiting for a critical safety report on the proposed diversion of buses through their community during the Confederation Line construction,  community members will undertake their own audit Thursday night. 

Residents have been asking the City for copies of the Pedestrian and Cycling Safety Audits prepared by Rideau Transit Group in preparation for the diversion of 2500 buses a day onto Scott and Albert streets, but  City officials and RTG say the report is not ready.  

"We're frustrated because the report is supposed to be the basis of safety measures that were described in early December. If that's the case, how can it now not be ready? This is critical information for the community," says the Hintonburg Community Association's Cheryl Parrott, one of the safety audit organizers. 

The first audit will be with the Women's Initiatives for Safer Environments (wiseottawa.ca) and will look at safety on the proposed new multi-use pathway that will be built on the north side of Bayview Transitway Station through the Bayview Yards.  Residents will also do an audit of the multi-use pathways on the north side of Scott and Albert streets from Holland to Empress. There will be four teams auditing different areas, looking for issues associated with lighting, hiding places, calling for emergency help and more. 

The organizers are also planning a walkability audit in May.
